About Last Night...

Posted on 24 May 2017

At LUS, we’re not about those one-night-stands... waking up the morning after in a bed of regret, in a pool of gels and serums. We'd rather you spend time with us, get to know us on a deeper level, learn what makes us tick... as we help you fall in love with your own natural beauty!

Lots of our amazing #LoveUrCurls girls regularly get to day 5 & 6 curls with LUS products like it ain’t no thang! We LOVE that. Another key product focus in our long list of demands from our own products (we’re not "easy") was this: commitment. LUS products had to be in it to win it.

Our formulations can’t be beat, so we want to help eliminate any “user errors” with LUS products and let you in on our best bedtime curly hair care tips.

1. Dry as a Bone
diffusing curly hair until dry blog
There are two types of people: morning shower-ers, and nighttime shower-ers.

Time of day doesn't matter to us, but PLEASE don’t sleep with wet hair. Don’t sleep with damp hair. Don’t sleep with ALMOST dry hair. Why not, you ask? Well, while your hair is still wet, it is extra vulnerable to damage (learn why we don’t even like to brush while wet here and some of the top mistakes with LUS products here).

We say it over and over again, but your curls shouldn’t even be touched too much until they’re fully dry—imagine what 8 hours of pressing it into your sheets will do to it? If you haven’t got time to properly diffuse or air dry before bed, postpone your wash until you do.

2. Satin Pillowcase

Sleep like Hugh Hefner, wake up like "Becky With The Good Hair"?! Sign me up!

Real talk—satin pillowcases reduce the amount of friction between the cloth and your hair, which boasts major benefits. We're talking: smoother hair strand cuticles, reduced frizz, and preserved definition of those waves, spirals, kinks and coils. For another (non-Hefner related) added bonus: these are all pertinent to skincare, too, and satin pillows are said to aid in the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.

3. Pineapple / Headscarf

There is one protective hairstyle in particular that will further aid in keeping those curls set. Most curly girls like to go for a “pineapple” at bedtime, which is when you gather all of your hair at the very top of your head and secure it with a loosely tied scrunchie or hairband. Tying hair *loosely* is key to avoid waking up with that awkward mid-length line.

You could also tie your hair in a silk headscarf, for all the same reasons as outlined above.

4. It’s All YOU
Depending on your hair length and curl type, you might need to work in all or none of these suggestions. Some girls are fine with just a pineapple, many of our girls do nothing at all! If you find yourself having to re-style your curly 'do each morning, play around with some of these suggestions until you’ve found that sweet spot.
